As you've worked with your Macintosh, you've
probably needed to expand on the services
provided by your system hardware or software
on more than one occasion...
All of these "services" go beyond the scope of application programs such as word processors or games since they can be used by any program that you run on your system. Apple provides manufacturers of these kinds of products with a flexible, easy way to extend the features of it's system software with the introduction of "startup files" (sometimes known as "INITs" or "extensions"). Since the services that they provide are always active and have to be available whenever application programs call for them, they are loaded when your system starts up. In fact, you may have noticed that a sequence of icons is displayed starting in the lower left hand corner of your screen as your system starts up. Each of these icons represent a loading startup file which is adding some new feature to your system software.
As the development and use of startup files has increased in popularity, the number of startup files used in most syatems has also increased. In fact, many of Apple's System 7.5 features are added to your system by startup files!
