Bausch & Lomb 4000 1200mm F/12 Telescope - Item # 0053 - SOLD
"Bausch & Lomb Professional Series of astronomical telescopes are engineered and assembled to the same exacting standards applied to Bausch & Lomb binoculars with unparalleled quality and optical clarity. This top-of-the line model will give the owner many long years of reliable, dependable use and a life-time of journeys to the stars."
Here is one of the greatest telescopes I have ever had the pleasure to use. It is the easiest to set up and use. It is compact and very portable. It is powerful and the images received are excellent. I have used this telescope mainly for terrestrial viewing, but have also enjoyed looking out into the stars, at the moon, and the other heavenly bodies. The manufacturer's claim is that you can see the detail in a quarter (25 cent coin) at a distance of one quarter of a mile. If you can get a rock-solid mount, and a very clear day, you can see the manufacturer's claim is true. I know it gives excellent results. There is also a camera adapter (INCLUDED) to connect the telescope to a Maxxum 7000 35mm SLR camera. I used it often to record wildlife at a considerable distance. (You could never get close enough to some animals to even begin to get any pictures without this high power telescope/lens. Pictures I would never have gotten with a regular telephoto lens have come out unbelievably crisp and clear. Expensive telephoto lenses costing upwards of $1500.00 still lack the magnification that this unit possesses. It amazingly will also magnify objects that are as close as seven or eight feet. Truly an amazing and multifunctional instrument.
Here are some of the specifics about this great telescope. It was manufactured by Bausch & Lomb® as their Schmidt-Cassegrain Professional Series 4000 Telescope. (Click here for an excellent description of telescope types). The diameter is approximately five inches with a total physical length of approximately 14 inches. Another smaller scope is attachable to the side for use as a spotting scope. It comes complete, in like new (excellent) condition, with all the accessories included when new. The carrying case is ruggedized black plastic with a fitted foam lining. The foam has additional cutouts for some common accessories. The case measures approximately 11 inches by 15 inches by 6 inches. It is hinged with two latches and a carrying handle. The entire package weighs about ten pounds. There is a standard mount on the telescope for a tripod. The serial number for this unit is: 0012522
Bausch & Lomb® made this scope for the professional star-gazer and there are many accessories available to improve the viewing experience. This is their basic model. The same scope with a motorized tracking system is available for several thousand dollars - if you really want to get serious. Other extras, like special eyepieces, focusers, different mounts and motorized mounts and charts, adapters, etc. are only a few of the accessories that are readily available. There are also camera adapters for nearly every lens mounting system ever made. So you can always connect this to a camera to capture your viewing on film. I've used it with my Minolta Maxxum and it works great.
The objective lens uses the entire diameter of the telescope creating a very large aperture. This is a very large aperture for a such a short body. Because of the reflecting mirrors, the focal length becomes nearly four feet. That's like a four foot long telescope in this 14 inch long package. Pretty amazing. The focusing eyepiece is approximately four inches long and houses the focuser and eyepiece. This focuser is preset for this telescope and not adjustable. The eyepiece is a high quality A.S.P. 30 mm. Many different eyepieces are available and easily exchanged by loosening a knurled knob on the side of the eyepiece tube. This telescope focuses by turning a knurled knob at the rear of the telescope next to the eyepiece. This knob has over ten turns end to end. This means there is a wide range of focusing control and accuracy.
Because of the high magnification of this telescope, Bausch & Lomb® incorporated another smaller scope mounted, in alignment, on the side of the telescope tube. This scope is a spotting scope and is used to first bring the object being viewed into alignment with the main telescope. This initial siting of the telescope would be difficult without this smaller magnification scope. It's very easy to put the object being viewed in the crosshairs of this smaller scope. This assures that the object being viewed shows up in the eyepiece of the main telescope. Once in the telescope's eyepiece, you use the fine focus control on the telescope to precisely focus on the object. This is an easy system to get used to and use.
This telescope is complete with everything you need except a clear starry night. Everything works perfectly. The condition is LIKE NEW. There are no scratches to any of the pieces, even the case is in like new condition. This well made telescope will provide years of excellent service to anyone who likes looking up at the stars, or anyone who wants to get close to wild game and natural animal behavior. With this telescope you don't have to get so close to your subject that they become spooked or nervous. You can view and take pictures at a distance that doesn't threaten them and they carry on as if you are not even there - if they are aware of you or not. It's easy to focus, hold, and easy to compose pictures. This camera includes everything in the photos that follow this description.
This telescope has been rated very high by all the photo and astronomy magazines.
